What Are The World’s Most Valuable Gemstones?

What Are The World’s Most Valuable Gemstones?

There’s nothing more captivating than an incredibly colorful gemstone. That might be why the red gemstones within ancient tombs or exquisite blue stones thrown off deep-sea exploring ships are at the crux of our favorite stories!

As Baltimore’s trusted diamond experts, our team at Samuelson’s has handled some of the most extraordinary gems in the market – and we’re always amazed to watch how the market changes over time.

While there are some gemstones that always seem to maintain their value, there are always shifts and changes that happen as consumer interests change.

Let’s take a look at some of the most valuable gemstones in the world – and how you can find out more about your own gemstone values with our team!

What Makes a Gemstone Valuable?

First, a question: What actually makes a gemstone “valuable” in the first place? There are a variety of key factors that go into how a gemstone is valued – from the rarity of the gem itself to the clarity and color quality.

What Is The Gemstone’s Rarity?

The scarcity of a gemstone, particularly in larger sizes or with exceptional qualities, significantly impacts its value. Some of the rarest gems come from depleted mines or single locations worldwide.

The Gemstone’s Color Quality

The intensity, saturation, and purity of a gemstone’s color often determine its worth. The most valuable specimens typically display vivid, rich hues without unwanted color overtones.

What Are The Clarity Characteristics?

While some inclusions are accepted or even desired in certain gems, the clearest, most transparent specimens generally command the highest prices.

The Current (and Forecasted) Market Demand

Current trends and historical prestige influence a gem’s value, with some stones gaining significant worth due to increased collector interest.

Top 5 Most Valuable Gemstones in 2025

With those factors in mind, let’s look at some of the top gemstones in 2025 and their values. (Warning: these might blow your mind!)

Pink Diamond: $1.2-3 Million Per Carat

Since the closure of Australia’s Argyle mine, natural pink diamonds have become one of the rare diamonds in the world – and that has sent their values soaring.

The most coveted are Fancy Vivid Pink diamonds, which showcase an intense, pure pink hue. The rarity of these stones, particularly in sizes above one carat, continues to push prices upward in 2025.

Blue Diamond: $900,000-2 Million Per Carat

Natural blue diamonds remain among the most sought-after colored diamonds in the market. These extraordinary gems get color from trace amounts of boron within their crystal structure. Like the pink, Fancy Vivid Blue diamonds are getting the highest prices right now – with the rarest gems regularly setting auction records.

Grandidierite: $500,000-1 Million Per Carat

This extremely rare bluish-green gemstone has seen a remarkable surge in value over the past few years. Found primarily in Madagascar, gem-quality specimens are exceptionally scarce, making them highly coveted by serious collectors and connoisseurs.

Musgravite: $35,000-50,000 Per Carat

With fewer than ten gem-quality specimens ever discovered, musgravite remains one of the rarest and most valuable gemstones in 2025. This grayish-green to purple gem shares chemical properties with taaffeite – another rare stone.

Ruby: $30,000-400,000 Per Carat

Burmese “Pigeon Blood” rubies are still setting the standard when it comes to measuring the value of rare rubies. The most valuable often showcase an incredible red color and excellent clarity – making them one of the top gems at market (particularly in sizes above 5 carats.)

Tips for Gemstone Buyers

While the above gems might be just a bit outside most buyer’s budgets, there are still ways you can make sure to invest in the highest-quality gemstones. These gems make great portfolio assets, as well as incredible family heirlooms that can be passed down for generations.

But how do you know that you are getting exactly what you pay for in the gemstone market? Here are some of our top tips when it comes to buying rare and expensive gems:

  • Always Do Your Research – Understanding market values helps you make informed decisions. Current prices can vary significantly based on quality and market conditions.
  • Consider A Gem’s Long-term Value – Some gemstones maintain value better than others. Focus on stones with proven market stability and growing demand.
  • Verify Authentication Always insist on certified stones from respected laboratories. This documentation becomes increasingly important as synthetic alternatives become more sophisticated.
  • Work with Established Dealers – Choose dealers with proven track records and deep market knowledge. At Samuelson’s, we offer:
    • Private, pressure-free consultations
    • Expert evaluation of your purchase options
    • Access to rare and exceptional stones
