These Coins Are Worth More Than You Think

Apr 15, 2020

Your 401(k) might be fluctuating, but the good news is that sales and purchases of gold coins and bars continue to be steady. While coins are generally meant to be spent, in some cases, their value can be worth far more than their buying power. What makes some coins and gold bars so valuable are their scarcity, their condition, and their historical significance. If you’re looking into selling your gold coins and bars, Samuelson’s Buyers is the best place to bring your pieces for the fairest value on the market.

Some of the types of one ounce coins and bars we are typically on the lookout for are as follows:

South African Krugerrand gold coin: The Krugerrand was originally introduced to promote South African gold as a form of private investment. With an image of Paul Kruger, a former South African politician and one side, and the Springbok antelope depicted on the other, the Gold Kruggerrand is composed of more than 90% gold.

Chinese Panda gold coin: The Chinese Gold Panda is one of the purest coins out there in terms of its content, being comprised of nearly 100% gold. Like most rare coins out there, the coin’s material content is worth far more than its buying power. One side depicts a Panda design that varies by the year, while the other depicts Beijing’s famous Temple of Heaven.

Mexican 50 Peso gold coin: These are commonly known as the gold Centenario because they were originally issued in celebration of 100 years of Mexican independence from Spanish rule. Unlike most coins, the Centenario was designed as a purely commemorative piece rather than one meant to be spent. One side depicts Winged Victory, and the other depicts Mexico’s coat of arms. These coins are about 90% gold and 10% copper.

American Buffalo gold coin: The American Gold Buffalo harkens back to the original 1913 Buffalo Nickel, but is minted in 99.99% pure gold. The nickel’s enduring popularity is due to its depictions of the American frontier with a Native American chief and American bison, and when it was struck again by the American mint, it marked the first time a gold coin was struck in that purity of content.

Australian Kangaroo gold coin: The kangaroo gold coin is highly valued in part due to its metal content being 99.99% gold, but also because of its artistry. Each year, a new design is unveiled in limited amounts of minting, which makes them especially desirable for any coin collector.

American Gold Eagle coin: The largest gold coin produced by the US Mint, it is composed of 91.67% gold. For a period of time, gold coins were outlawed by the US Government, and were only able to come back into production in 1985, using gold sources within the country’s borders. The American Gold Eagle coin is considered to be one of the most beautiful coins in the world.

Canadian Maple Leaf gold coin: A standard gold coin in any collector’s kit, the Canadian Maple Leaf gold coin depicts Queen Elizabeth II on one side and the country’s iconic image of a maple leaf on the other. The design has remained consistent throughout the years, and the content is 99.99% gold.

Credit Suisse gold bar: While these are available in different weights minted in 99.99% fine gold, we particularly love the 1 oz. version. Credit Suisse is one of the most highly respected financial institutions in the world, and their gold bars are of a quality befitting such an institution. Pictured on their gold bars are the Credit Suisse logos, engravings of the bar’s weight and purity, as well as an assayer’s mark and serial number.

Perth mint gold bar: Much like the Australian Kangaroo gold coin, these bars are highly valued for their sheer beauty. One side showcases the Perth Mint’s seal, while the other is a repeating pattern of leaping kangaroos. The 1 oz. bars are made of 99.99% fine gold.
