German Watch Brands You Should Know

Dec 20, 2013

The art of luxury watchmaking is almost always associated with the famous and plentiful watchmakers and manufacturers of Switzerland, high in the small, snow covered towns and villages of the Swiss Alps. While it is true that the majority of luxury watches do come from the Swiss, there are some very prestigious watchmakers in Germany as well, a country that has long been known for its skill in precision mechanics. Of two most well known and luxurious German watch brands manufacturing watches today are A. Lange & Söhne and Glashütte Original. A. Lange & Söhne A. Lange & Söhne operates as a true top tier watch manufacturer. Their watches rival those of Patek Philippe, Audemars Piguet and Vacheron Constantin, those known as “The Big Three” of Swiss watchmaking. Some argue that the finishing on the Lange movements is the nicest and most beautiful finishing being done today. A_1 The Lange brand was originally founded in 1845 by Ferdinand Adolph Lange, and was run by the Lange family until 1948, when the company’s property was expropriated by the post-war Soviets, and the company was shut down. In 1990, Walter Lange, great-grandson of founder Ferdinand Adolph Lange, with the help of some respected and kind Swiss watch manufacturers, restored the brand, and has since brought it back to the very same level of quality and luxury as in the days of old. A_2 Lange continues to produce highly complicated and beautifully finished watches that are some of the most desirable watches made today. They are most well known for their Lange 1 design. An asymmetrical design, yet a very easy to read watch, with no overlap of functions, and with a large date, it is instantly recognizable as the hallmark of true Lange design. Glashütte Original Glashütte Original is more of a newcomer to the watch world, founded in 1994 in the city of Glashütte , which was the very same city in which the Lange brand was founded, almost 150 years earlier. While the world of luxury watch making is not an easy world to enter as a newcomer, as there are countless watchmakers with hundreds of years of history behind them, Glashütte Original has achieved great success in their craft, and is now a very well regarded and honored watch manufacturer. G_1 While Glashütte Original does manufacture some very high end complicated pieces like Lange does, they mostly operate in the entry to mid-level luxury watch field, with many models in the five to six thousand dollar MSRP range. The most popular Glashütte watches are those in the Senator series. There are a number of models in the series, all with a simple and clean dial layout, easy to read and very classically styled. These watches are almost all available at very reasonable prices for the value they offer. G_2 Both new and old, these two watch manufacturers continue the tradition of respected and precise mechanical design from Germany. There is always a strong demand for both Lange and Glashütte Original watches on the second-hand market. Many models from these brands do hold a good percentage of their value as pre-owned watches and are desirable by watch dealers like us.
