As the summer heat starts to increase, the need to cool off becomes a daily pursuit. For those of us who can’t jump in the car and head to the beach, here are a few ideas for how to “chill” on a hot summer day in and around Baltimore:
1. Take a dip – Are you looking for a fantastic location for a summer birthday party or just a good excuse to get together with a bunch of friends at a venue that’s a little different from the norm? The Baltimore harbor features something truly unique. Try the Tiki Barge’s Small Group Party Package! The Small Group Party Package includes four hours of pool access, two drinks and one menu item for only $45 per person. And if you’re just looking for a place to spend the day relaxing and have a little more in the budget, check out The Four Season’s Hotel Pool. Spa guests can have the use of the Hotel pool if they book and pay for a spa treatment at the value of $150 or more. On this Baltimore Harbor hotel’s fourth floor, the Splash Terrace provides a lushly landscaped urban oasis with the Inner Harbor as its backdrop. Monday through Thursday only.
2. Get a dip – Baltimore has some of the best cool treats in the Northeast. If you like ice cream, head over to Dominion Ice Cream for a completely different taste experience. Located near Johns Hopkins University in Charles Village , the creamery creates ice cream with ingredients such as cucumbers, beets, sweet corn, spinach, butternut squash, red cabbage, and sweet potatoes. There are also more traditional flavors for those who are less adventurous. For you FroYo lovers, Fed Hill is a great place, featuring Afters Café. It continues to get rave reviews not only for its smorgasbord of frozen yogurts and toppings but for its customer service. This is the perfect spot to grab dessert and Illy drip coffee after dinner or for that lunchtime cold treat. And for those who have a hankering for gelato, don’t miss Pitango Gelato. After a few spoonfuls at this Fells Point gelato joint you’ll understand why there is often a line stretching out the door.
3. Do a dip – At first blush, you might be thinking that doing dips or other exercises is going to do anything but cool you off. However, when part of a weight-loss regimen, working out will help cool you down in the long run. The extra fat that the body carries around can cause your internal temperature to rise by several degrees. By losing that fat and carrying less of a load, you will help keep your body cooler in hot weather. Hit up the Canton Club for the help you need to get started. The trainers at Canton Club work as a team to motivate and guide clients through their fitness programs. Panoramic views of Baltimore’s Inner Harbor probably don’t hurt either. And if you become a member, The Baltimore Marine Center offers Canton Club Members special seasonal rates for access to the best outdoor pool in Baltimore.
So don’t be afraid of the impending August heat. Baltimore offers lots of options to stay cool.
